We rely heavily on openers to open our garage doors for us but even without these automatic machines, we can still easily open the door thanks to the action of springs. Typically, the only time we are reminded of this is when the opener itself is temporarily not functioning and we have to detach the door from the opener to manually open it.
A normal person will have a hard time lifting even the equivalent of their own bodyweight above their heads, let alone lifting something that can be as heavy as two or three people. Some of the heaviest wooden garage doors can tip the scales at 400 lbs. This is not something to be taken lightly. Lifting such a massive weight requires some power – and this is where garage door springs come in. A torsion spring is effective when it comes to lifting heavy loads because it stores enough torque that can easily be translated into mechanical energy. If you are using this type of spring, you'll find it attached to the middle of a shaft that's situated just above the doorway. At the ends of this shaft are cable drums that guide the cables that connect to the door. The other kind of spring is the extension spring. The extension spring tends to be smaller that's why a typical set up will require 1 or 2 pairs of them. They are attached to the sides of the door and their action doesn't rely on torsion – it's based instead on the spring's recoil.
As much as garage door springs are useful, they can also be quite dangerous. This is because of the energy they store when they're loaded. This energy, when unexpectedly released can do some serious harm to anyone who happens to be in the way. If you notice that they require some adjustments or that you may have the older extension spring models that don't have the safety cable running through them, then just call us and we'll take care of it for you.
